David Calvert

Artistic Director


David has been a professional theatre practitioner for the past 37 years, with work as an actor between 1981-86 ranging from Druid Theatre Galway to the Lyric Theatre Belfast. Since 1987 David has been an Arts Council-funded physical theatre practitioner with young people in locations throughout Northern Ireland and fulL time Artistic Director of Th KIC Project since its inception in 1997. 

At the Lyric Theatre Belfast, David’s work ranges from Lyric Drama Studio Physical Theatre Tutor for 18-25 year olds considering a career in acting to Movement Director for Lyric Creative Learning productions. He is Movement Director for the annual Blackout production, an initiative by the Creative Learning department to employ emerging actors and artists. David is also a regular Physical Theatre tutor for the Lyric Theatre School.

Keeping KIC at the forefront of disability arts and inclusiveness, David is leading KIC in a partnership with the University of Atypical, the premier disabled-led arts charity, taking an empowerment-based approach towards supporting disabled and deaf people’s involvement in the arts.  This partnership has produced several original physical theatre productions for Bounce, an annual arts festival produced by The University of Atypical, and supported the emergence of The Blue Chevy Ensemble, featuring KIC staff, Jade Hale and Linda Fearon.
